Everyone in Bulgaria has the right to free education in primary (elementary) schools.
In higher-level schools, students who can afford it pay a small fee, but no one is turned away because of money.

There are no class divisions in Bulgarian schools. Rich and poor children go to school together and receive the same education.

Religious Tolerance and Equal Rights

Bulgarians are known as the most tolerant people in the Balkans.
All citizens, no matter their religion, have equal political and religious rights The Catholic Church in Bulgaria.

For example, there are 602,000 Muslims living in Bulgaria, and for 35 years they have never been mistreated.

Muslims have their own religious leaders called muftis, who are chosen by their communities. These muftis are paid by the government.

Muslim schools also receive financial support from the government, but they are run independently by Muslim committees.

Jewish Communities and Support

Jewish people live in organized communities in towns across the country.
In recent years, many Jewish refugees from Russia have moved to Bulgaria to escape persecution.

In 1887, there were 24,352 Jews in Bulgaria.

There are two American Protestant missions working freely in Bulgaria. They are allowed to continue their religious work without any restrictions.

Sometimes people have falsely accused Bulgaria of treating Catholics unfairly.
However, Catholics in Bulgaria enjoy complete freedom and equal rights just like everyone else.
